Episode Summary:

Obviously, your skin provides the physical barrier to protect what is inside of your body.  It also helps to regulate your temperature and act as a route for elimination for fluids like sweat and oils.  This is why good lifestyle with disciplines in a self-care practice should be taken seriously.

Our skin IS ruled by our hormones and is covered in small glands called sebaceous glands. They secrete an oil called sebum that helps lubricate your skin and keep it healthy. Within these glands are receptors that respond to hormones, and react according to factors like hormone levels.

“There are millions of products out on the market that claims to “fix” your skin issues, but we encourage you to stop chasing the hype and get back to basics when it comes to treating your skin.”

In this next YOUNGER podcast episode, I will discuss the basics of how to maintain good health through your skin.  There are many factors to consider, such as age, diet, exercise, sleep, and stress. Listen as I am inclusive in the opportunity for all to understand its powerful connection to living a youthful and regenerative life.

She has produced films, original television series and specials, created several companies, and led campaigns for some of the world’s most recognized companies (ABC, CBS, Discovery, BBC, Facebook, Apple, Intel, Virgin, and many more).

A proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Shirin founded OML TV, a popular platform dedicated to streaming and curating quality, queer female, video content and OML Originals, a female led production company telling diverse female stories through a vast spectrum of film and television genres. Today, Shirin guides seekers in her six-week program, Free to Be, to disconnect their human “being” from their human “doing” to find true and lasting fulfillment.  She lives in Marin County, California, with her wife and two children.

Episode Summary:

From an early age we’re taught that in order to be worthy, to find true happiness, to be “somebody,” we have to accomplish many things. We become achievement machines, always grasping for the next big win to send a signal to the world—and to ourselves—that we’ve “made it.” That we are happy.

But do we ever “make it,” really? Are we truly happy not in the “#livingmybestlife” and “#blessed” way in which we caption our social media pages, but from a truly contented place of inner peace and joy? One where the yearning for the bigger house, the better job, the younger, more pliable spouse takes a backseat to the yearnings of our hearts and souls, a place where contentment just “is”?

Think about it, our bones support the body structurally, protect our vital organs, and allow us to move. To add to the importance of our bone structure for the body, they provide an environment for bone marrow, where blood cells are created, and they act as a storage area for minerals, particularly calcium.

At birth, we have around 270 soft bones and as we grow, some fuse together leaving the adult human body with 206 bones, 26 of which are in each foot and 54 in each hand and wrist.

In general, our bones stop growing in length during puberty. The bone density and strength are known to change over the course of life.

“The immune system is a complex network of cells and organs that defend the body against infection.”

“The first line of defense is known as innate immunity. This is a range of protective mechanisms we are all born with, that ranges from your skin which acts like an external barrier to chemical barriers occurring naturally within.”

“Once you become familiar with the body’s early induced responses such as inflammation.  It is important to understand the significance of this early induced response as a way your innate immunity will communicate to you and the reason you want to pay attention to it.”

“The second line of defense is called, acquired immunity.”

“When your immune system is exposed to a pathogen, it learns to recognize, and record it. This is how your body naturally becomes better equipped to fight off that type of germ the next time you’re exposed to it.”

Episode Summary:

As most are finding out, sometimes the hard ways, our current healthcare model seems to focus on disease. If you feel sick, and go to a doctor the most likely outcome would be a prescription to address the symptoms related to your disease. You are, then, told you are healed because your cough is gone or your nausea subsided.

Does that sound familiar?

This is great for short-term issues as you are able to mask your discomfort fairly quickly. However, for more long-term issues, this medical model fails on addressing the real issues of disease.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines disease as, “a condition of the living animal or plant body or of one of its parts that impairs normal functioning and is typically manifested by distinguishing signs and symptoms.”

Many are now saying Functional Medicine is, “the future of healthcare,” and yet it is still widely unknown what sets this practice apart from the conventional healthcare provided today.

In my next YOUNGER podcast episode called, “Combat Autoimmune Challenges Naturally” will define the main differentiating principles of functional medicine such as it becoming:

  • the model of personalized care
  • a focus on the causes of discomfort versus the symptoms
  • and a deep-seated trust in the individual’s body to self-regulate

I discuss how functional medicine is revolutionizing the medical field by empowering patients to better understand imbalances in their bodies, how these imbalances affect their health, and the solutions available to support the normal healing mechanisms within their body. And most importantly, I share how functional medicine field helps redefine how we think of “disease” by providing a more productive framework to achieve optimal health.

Functional medicine practitioners recognize that disease is the result of underlying causes, imbalances, and dysfunctions of the various bodily systems.

Quotes:

“When we begin to think of dis-ease as a result from an issue rather than the issues itself, treatment can be administered in a way that provides long term relief, promotes sustainable health, and empowers the patient in their individualized healing process.”

“Due to the lack of understanding of autoimmune diseases, conventional medicine works to treat the particular organs affected rather than viewing them all for what they are: dis-eases of the immune system. Therefore, there is no unified branch of medicine for these autoimmune conditions.”

“Stress and disease go hand-in-hand. When stress is not managed properly (or at all), the body takes the load, becomes inflamed, and often develops or worsens autoimmune conditions.”

Episode Summary:

Anxietyaccording to Oxford Dictionaries, is defined as, “a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.”

Everyone experiences this at some point. In fact, anxiety is a somewhat normal reaction to stress as it can initiate our flight or fight response and keep us alert to our surroundings. However, it is important to learn the difference between feelings of anxiety and a true anxiety disorder.

There are several different anxiety disorders, and they all have defining characteristics that make their diagnoses possible. On my next YOUNGER podcast episode, I will help you distinguish key factors that relate to anxiety, such as:

  • Intensity and length of time
  • Impairment
  • Physical manifestations

I will discuss a variety of anxiety disorders and define what makes each different from one another. You might be learning more about anxiety for the first time for personal self-awareness, or maybe to help your child, a family member or a friend.

I explain the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) categories of anxiety disorders and how they are listed in three groupings:

  1. Anxiety Disorders
  2. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders
  3. Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders

There are many different recognized anxiety disorders that all vary in severity. Just remember, these are very serious conditions for those who suffer from them.

“Anxiety is a complicated topic due to its complexity. This information is important for all of us to feel supported, safe, and aware of the many aspects of this subject.”
